Education, workplace learning, skill-building and entrepreneurship accessible to thousands of deaf community learners
There are over 70 million deaf people worldwide. More than 80% of them live in developing countries. Collectively, they use more than 300 different sign languages. When we think of equal access for deaf people, their everyday needs and real inclusion is missing from our checklist.
As a community, the deaf lack access and information that we, people who can hear, take for granted. I felt it was my calling to connect both these worlds and make it an equal playing field.”

Nita Gopalkrishnan, the Founder of Sign Medium and her eldest brother were born to hearing-impaired parents. Sign language was probably the primary language used by them to communicate within the household. The best part is that she has not only extended her learnings of childhood into adulthood but also made it into her work sphere.
As a community, the deaf lack access and information that we, people who can hear, take for granted. I felt it was my calling to connect both these worlds and make it an equal playing field.”
Ms. Nita Gopalakrishnan,
Founder Sign Medium
Talking about her parents Nita shares that her parents were intelligent as any hearing couple trying to bring up a child in this world. What made them extraordinary was their determination to bring up two hearing children, fighting the odds and challenges of communication. They found ways to ensure a good education, healthcare and lifestyle for them.
She would prefer not to call her childhood difficult, but different Yes! Once she was able to speak and communicate with others, her parents relied on them to bridge the communication with the rest of the world. They had to be the interpreter, negotiators, communicators and even a counselor at a very young age
That's where she got her inspiration from. Nita shares that 95% of deaf children are born from hearing parents. She strongly recommends exploring sign language as a communication option along with any medical interventions like hearing aid or implants. That would set them up for growth and success, and create an environment of communication for their deaf children.
Scaling up was on Nita & her husband, Chaithanya Kothapalli's minds when they single-mindedly took up the cause of making education, information and entertainment accessible to over 18 million deaf people in the country. Their other digital products in the same domain like Sign Channel & Sign Medium were already getting noticed. They were not just their hustles, but probably their mission, goal and ambition. They had set their eyes on more. They had the content, the drive and the corporate experience to string it all together. They started deep diving into discovering more about the special needs of the hearing challenged.
Automation had to fill in the gaps now. Chaithanya's tech background & Nita's educational bent came in quite handy over there. Knorish chipped in to bring in all their digital products under its platform. No wonder within two months, Sign Medium had 50+ courses running on its platform. Knorish gave a true marketing boost and a great user experience that doubled Sign Medium's impact.
Their Zoom Live Classes were an instant hit. Vocational Training courses in blouse designing, professional make-up, hair styling, English grammar, and investments were giving hope to parents, and the deaf community. In the self-learning sessions, interested ones could go on learning sign language. The most interesting part was the way it encouraged anyone and everyone from the community to come forward and take an initiative to learn sign language and contribute to the cause of the community.
They had not invested in hiring any surplus design or tech teams, Knorish's DIY model ensured that they were quite self-sustainable.
Cost-effective This has been clear to the Founder couple that the reach of sign language is not limited to the deaf community. Taboos are to be broken. Sign language is not just the language of the deaf, more and more people have to learn. Sign Medium has opened a significant chapter in the conversation thus. On average, Sign Medium interacts with 6,000+ active users on its platform. Users are encouraged to learn various useful day-to-day skills. They have made quite a positive community impact, and have also been able to reach decent revenue goals.
